2018 Community Shield: Which players could steal the show?

The 2018 FA Community Shield is fast approaching and will be the first piece of competitive action English fans will be looking to buy football tickets for following the conclusion of the World Cup in Russia this week, and the first competitive meeting of the 2018-19 season.

Premier League champions Manchester City and Emirates FA Cup holders Chelsea will battle it out at Wembley Stadium this year where, as always, there will be a star-studded array of talent on show for the supporters who get themselves their Community Shield football tickets.

Here’s a handful of names you can expect to impress as both English giants battle to claim the 96th shield on August 5.

Benjamin Mendy

After so much hype due to his social media presence and the £52m fee Man City paid AS Monaco for his services, it was a real shame to see Benjamin Mendy feature just seven times in the Premier League last season.

A Cruciate Ligament Rupture in September pretty much ended the charismatic Frenchman’s season before it even started, so he’ll be hoping to kick-off what should be his first full campaign in England off with a bang with Leroy Sané down the left flank.

It would be worth purchasing a football ticket to see his banter on the field alone… possibly.

Sergio Agüero

It’s already been confirmed that Sergio Agüero will return to his homeland Argentina and retire there once his current contract at City runs out in 2019, meaning the 2018-19 season will be the legendary striker’s last in England.

With Gabriel Jesus expected to continue as Pep Guardiola’s preferred frontman, Agüero will be planning on using the Community Shield as a platform to show the manager that he can be a better option than the exciting Brazilian starlet.

It’s no secret that he’ll also be planning on helping City to another piece of silverware to add to the success he’s already brought to the club.

Okay, fine. Alisson Becker isn’t actually a Chelsea player at this moment in time but The Blues are heavily favoured to sign the AS Roma goalkeeper this summer.

Current no. 1 Thibaut Courtois has grown unhappy at Stamford Bridge amidst interest from Real Madrid which could pave the path for a transfer.

The Community Shield obviously won’t make or break his career, take David de Gea’s performance in 2011 as the perfect example, but he’ll be able to give Chelsea fans who have bought Community Shield football tickets the chance to see how he is just as reliable as Courtois in between the sticks.

Cesc Fàbregas

After being excluded from Spain’s 2018 World Cup squad, Cesc Fàbregas – unbelievably – has a lot to prove this season under what’s likely to be new management in the form of Maurizio Sarri.

The impending arrival of CSKA Moscow midfielder Aleksandr Golovin will certainly spur Fàbregas on to make an impact in front of those with Community Shield tickets, in a match that could determine his role under a new boss.

There’s no denying Fàbregas’ quality, so he’ll have to step up and prove it in what will be a fascinating midfield battle against City’s wizards.
